Defending Champions Forced to Withdraw from Prescott Rally

Pine, AZ. The Widget Rally Team has been forced to withdraw from the Prescott Rally, driver Brian Scott announced today. The team won last year's event, part of the U.S. Rally Championship Series sanctioned by NASA. This year it is scheduled to be held on 2-3 Oct 2009. "I've been building a vintage rally car, a Datsun 240Z, but when I realized it wasn't going to be ready for Prescott," he explained, "I figured I'd fix the Subaru after our little crash in Idaho. Unfortunately, we just found some frame damage that can't be repaired in time."

The "little crash" that he referred to happened at the Idaho Rally last July. The team had been leading all day, but on the last stage, they slid off the road and knocked down a 60 foot Douglas fir tree. "We weren't injured," noted John Dillon, Scott's codriver, "and the damage appeared to be just cosmetic—you know, windshield, hood, door, fender. Once the car was extracted, he was able to drive it out of the stage without a problem. Engine, transmission and suspension all seemed perfect. Apparently the frame damage was hidden behind sheet metal."

Naturally the team is disappointed. "Prescott is my home event," said Scott. "My company, Scott Roofing, sponsors the Prescott Rally, so I'll be up there in a support role, helping the organizers as 'fast sweep.'"

Said Dillon, "It's a bummer we won't be able to defend last year's victory. Prescott has some of the most beautiful roads in the country. Well, there's always next year!"

Primary funding comes from Scott Roofing Company, providing roofing services for homes and businesses all across Arizona. Widget insists on brakes by Porterfield Enterprises (www.porterfield-brakes.com) and utilizes the web services of Shults Dot Com (www.shults.com) for its internet needs. The car is prepared by Doug Chernis at RaceTechnik.
