Hillsboro, OR. John Dillon (Thousand Oaks, CA) once again codrove for Ralph Kosmides (Irvine, CA) of Kono Motorsports, this time at the Oregon Trail Rally the weekend of 21-23 April 2006, racing a Subaru Impreza sponsored by Ruby's Restaurants. Unlike their two previous outings where the team finished first overall (Treeline 2004 and Reno 2005), they could only muster a second place finish in the Group N category (fifth overall).
"It's not easy to admit," said Dillon, "but I made a couple of lousy mistakes over the weekend. There were several places where I got too far ahead [in reading the stage notes] or I got lost completely. Ralph said his driving didn't meet up with his expectations either." At the end of Saturday, with one day of racing left, they met with the rest of the crew for a debriefing. As a result of this analysis and discussion, the Sunday stages went much smoother and both players felt much better.
Though the in-car crew members struggled, the Ruby's Subaru performed reliably. Crew chief Steve McNaughton, with Doug Nagy's help, kept everything tight and tidy on the car. Their only real work came when the car broke a suspension piece on Saturday. They tackled the repair quickly and thoroughly, allowing Ralph and John to pick up the pace a bit for the remaining stages.
Even though they only finished second in class and fifth overall, the team is nonetheless satisfied. "Ralph and I talked about it afterwards and we both agreed that neither of us was on our game this weekend," reported the codriver. "We realized that we weren't performing as well as we expected, and we compensated for it. Yeah, we had to slow down a little, but Ralph is smart enough to recognize when it's wiser to back off the pace in order to keep the car on the road than to push recklessly and crash into a tree." He closed, observing "It's just one of those things, but we recovered on Sunday so it still proved to be a valuable weekend."
Ralph agreed, pointing out that "Sometimes it takes an extra bit of adversity to bring back your focus, to challenge you to overcome the problems. If this was easy, everyone would do it!"
